Welcome to the autumn edition of the Marche Voyager newsletter. A gentle September with morning mists and the smell of rain, after a parched and searingly hot summer. We've seen a slow return to something like normality, with plenty of Italian and other European tourists, but few English voices in the streets.

Covid vaccination rates in the Marche are some of the highest in Italy: around 72% of people over 12 have been inoculated to date, with some 976,943 now fully vaccinated in the region. Currently there are around 130 new infections per day, a figure which has been declining slightly over the last week.

Next year’s Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro is set to run from 9-21 August, and features two new productions of the maestro’s operas: Le Comte Ory and Otello. There will also be a revival of the 2015 production of La Gazzetta and the popular series of belcanto recitals.

There's still time to catch BrodettoFest at Fano, three days dedicated to brodetto, the Marche's celebrated fish stew, from 10 September.

The man from Perugia
The Palazzo Ducale at Urbino is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the great Rennaisance master Il Perugino until 17 October. Pietro Vannucci is better known as il Perugino, or the man from Perugia, and this modest show, featuring some 20 works, examines his role as Raphael's influencial teacher.

Borghi and best!
The Borghi più belli d'Italia organization promotes the prettiest of Italy's small villages. In the Marche, Morro D'Alba in Ancona province, has been added to the list, making 28 places in the region out of a total of some 300 across the whole country.
In alphabetic order these are Cingoli, Corinaldo, Esanatoglia, Frontino, Gradara, Grottammare, Macerata Feltria, Mercatello sul Metauro, Mondavio, Mondolfo, Montecassiano, Montecosaro, Montefabbri, Montefiore dell'Aso, Montelupone, Monte Grimano Terme, Moresco, Morro d'Alba, Offagna, Offida, Pergola, San Ginesio, Sassoferrato, Sarnano, Servigliano, Treia, Torre di Palme and Visso.

There are 306 people per 1,000 inhabitants in the Marche with a RAI TV licence; this compares with an average of 295 for central Italy as a whole, while the average figures for north and south Italy are, respectively, 308 and 233 per 1,000. The figures, though, are a few years old: now, cunningly, the TV licence fee is included in the Italian electricity bill.
